Power Cut

Situation report: Power failing. Internet access sporadic. Transformer replacement scheduled to start at two. Won’t be complete before dark. Gathering supplies, charging ‘phone. More later. Out.
I thought the World had come to an end yesterday.
I was sat in the library in the gathering darkness, the only light being the pale, flickering emergency exit sign above the door. Indoors was eerie and still. Outside, snow fell in silent whirling flurries, like flakes of icy fallout from some distant nuclear war. The quad was dark. The emergency lights had failed hours ago. The library was silent, empty of the familiar whirr of electronic devices. The only sound was the occasional scratching of my pen against paper.

You see, the World had come to an end, and I was still sat in the library doing physics.
We had a nine-hour power cut yesterday. Something to do with an exploded substation; there were fire engines. They were going to serve food once the power came back. Some parts of college already had power. The best source of information was unsubtly slowing down as you walked past frantic college officials making ‘phone calls. Evidently the rumour mill is not electrically powered.
The next power cut is at least scheduled: two ’til eight. Ah, well, another opportunity to photograph blacked-out college. Perhaps, unlike last night, after popping for a meal out in Pizza Hut (truly the end of the World was nigh) I’ll actually get more than one photo before the flickering explosion of light as college gets re-wired.
More later.
Out.
