This is mildly annoying; my first week in Oxford with only one tutorial, therefore making it the most laid-back week ever (well, apart from the three days post-exams in Trinity last year) and, due to lack of other free weeks leading to extra-curricular stagnation, I can’t think of anything exciting to do!

The reason for this marginally-free week is that we’re getting a tute’s worth of time to prepare our talks (’Communicating Through Public Presentations’ - because it’s no longer important to do great science, but convincing people you have is). My exciting talk is called ‘Photography Exposed’, and was criticised by two words which have dogged my public speaking career: SLOW DOWN!

One aspect with which I am pleased, however, is that I manage to get nudity twice into a presentation which is ostensibly about the nature of colour and its use in making, recording and displaying images.

I have just put my washing in the laundry, which has led me to ask the exciting question "What is automatic washing powder?" I can think of no way in which you could create ‘manual’ washing powder which required some kind of human intervention to correctly function…does the automatic stuff do away with all that pesky clutch work whilst changing gear? Anybody know?

In other news, the New & Improved MSN Search is great! Some of our rankings on Google are not-quite-perfect, but MSN seems to be a lot kinder. I tried searches on Statto, JTA, Andrew Steele, John Trevor-Allen, KTAB and KTAB News and we do rather well on all of them. Especially comical is "KTAB News", where the Abilene vintage come bottom of the page, underneath a flood of links relating to KTAB News proper.

Try asking both google and MSN search How much does bill gate earn? Guess which one gives you as answer and which one sends you to pcadvisor.com. I think i’ll be sticking to google for now.
